SURFACE TO SURRFACE WORKSHOP: SUPPLY LIST

 

A variety of supplies are needed due to the range of techniques offered. Many of them you’ll already have around the house. None are expensive.

Portable Table Top
(lightweight padded surface for various textile processes) Cut at home and bring to class:
1 sheet of styrofoam or foam insulation , about 1” thick about 27” X 24”
2 sheets of cardboard
dimensions of foam & cardboard: about 27” x 24” (cardboard can be spliced)
scraps of low loft quilt batting ,felt or flannel, 3-4 pieces, approx. 36” x 30” each
heavy gauge plastic, not textured (oil cloth,drop cloth, etc. ), 1 piece approx. 36” x 30”
cotton muslin fabric, 1 piece approx. 36” x 30” (to use as drop cloth)
duct tape

Note: If convenient, bring extra materials to make more than one table top). If traveling, adjust size a little if needed, but too small isn’t useful.

General Art/Office Supplies
sketchbook
pencil, (mechanical is easiest), soft leads
ruler (C-thru is best)
scissors (all purpose, for paper)
glue stick
T pins (or extra, strong straight pins)
xacto knife (not box cutter)
white glue (small bottle, Sobo best but any ok)
white plastic erasers (3)
brushes: bring a variety of whatever you have, include foam brushes 1 1/2” -2” wide,
a cheap watercolor brush, also good-flat stiff nylon art brush. stencil brush (opt)

Sewing Supplies
scissors (for fabric)
scissors (small sharp point but not your best)
needles (large enough for button & carpet thread)
button & carpet thread, poly-cotton thread (neutral color)
straight pins
seam ripper (opt)
thimble (opt)

Fabrics (pre washed)
basic: plain untreated dyeable muslin (3-5 yards)
for experimentation: light colored prints, light colored solids, a few darks
Note: cotton most versatile for these techniques
a fusible e.g. Stitch Witchery (for final project)
felt ( few squares or 1/2 yd)

Containers, et al.
plastic containers ( 2 each: quart & pint plus a couple smaller, e.g. yogurt-sized)
styrofoam plates (3-4)
plastic spoons, forks, knives (a couple each)
plastic bucket (about 2 gal., from hardware or paint store, good for carrying stuff to class)
small spray bottle

Hardware Store
plastic putty knife (1 1/2” preferred, hardware store)
contact paper, 1 yd
string: varied weights (e.g. nylon thread, kite string, postal twine, jute, etc.)
masking tape, no wider than 1/2”
dust mask
clothespins (hinged kind, not one-piece type)

Miscellaneous
old towel
rubber bands (smallest, e.g. tiny ones for hair)
dental floss
a couple of unique plastic buttons (to identify your work in dye pot)
Q Tips (about 12)

Materials fee, for dyes, paints, handouts and other supplies will be about $30.
