SHIBORI, BEYOND THE SAMPLER: SUPPLY LIST


 

Fabric: recommended PFD fabric (“prepared for dyeing”).
3 yds of washed, dried, untreated, 44-45 “ wide 100% white cotton, cut in the following manner:

1. cut two 4 1/2” (1/8 yard) strips across width of fabric.
2. cut four 9” (1/4 yard) strips across width of fabric .
3. cut two of the 1/4 yard strips into 9”x9” squares (8-10 squares)
4. bring the remaining fabric uncut

a small amount of linen or silk for experimenting (optional)

Thread: Button & Carpet, Craft or Upholstery Thread (stronger than regular sewing thread)
Sewing needles (large enough for above thread), thimble if you use one
Embroidery-sized scissors (not your best) or thread snips
Seam ripper

A 12 inch ruler
A pencil
Small spray bottle
Masking tape
Roll of Twine (not heavy weight)
Crochet Thread (optional)

A bucket for rinsing
Some plastic storage bags (to transport damp fabric)
A trash bag (to cover table)
An old towel
Rubber Gloves (a la Playtex)
Dust Mask
Surgical weight rubber gloves (optional)
Wear old clothes

Any shibori or tie dye samples you may have
A sample of your work or a project to share

Note: n Because of sink limitations and class size, we’ll be using small diameter pipes. This means pole dyed fabric will be in fairly narrow strips, but will allow us to experiment with more samples. If I’m driving to the workshop, I will provide the pipes. For long distance workshops, students should bring two pvc pipes, 1 1/2” in diameter and 24” long. Outside surface must be smooth and not perforated as well as free of deep scratches.
